Apples and Cinnamon: an 8 minute, midnight, $1 dessert that is actually good for you.

I’ll admit I watched ‘The Bachelor Canada’ at 11 pm when I couldn’t sleep. I am a hapless victim to bad TV when I’m hit with a bit of insomnia. Especially infomercials- remember Ron Popeil: “Set it…(the audience chimes in) … and forget it!!!”. That was for Ronco’s good ole rotisserie oven. I also remember the Flowbie. The Ginsu knife guy. And the scary period in infomercial exercise land with the electro ab machine that ‘shocked’ your ab muscles into a six pack.

I had an inexplicable craving for a donut. and I walked over to tim hortons and got a small pack of timbit donut holes for $3. On the way there I was thinking- Chocolate Glaze, Good old fashion plain, and maybe some lemon powdery ones. At that time of night they only had plain or honey dip. I think this was a good thing. I ate 4 plains and left the rest for my husband to have with coffee for breakfast.

“You went to TIM HORTONS?!” he says in the morning. I don’t think I’ve set foot in a timmies in over 10 years. I actually can’t think of the last time I had a donut!  Maybe it was reading the Gourmet Donut article in the Georgia Straight, or the Vegan Pumpkin Donut recipe I’ve been eyeing as an experiment with one of the 3 CSA squashes on our counter.  Maybe it was the relentless tim horton’s ads every commercial break ( I can’t believe I’m that gullible!) but the next night, I wanted a donut again.

One trip to timmies in a decade I can forgive. Two nights in a row was becoming a bit frightening. What the hell was I going to do the next night if then again I wanted a donut?

My first instinct was to make chocolate cocoa. I had a sneaking suspicion sipping on hot chocolate wasn’t going to do it for me.  I also thought briefly about making my own donuts. or a piece of toast and jam. I grabbed my nourishing traditions cookbook and flipped to chapter: “Sweets for Kids of All Ages”. There on page 540 was ‘Sauteed Apples’. Hmmm. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be any good. Then I saw that Fresh Tart posted a similar recipe using cinnamon, honey, and creme fraiche and went ahead.

I chopped up the apples, threw them in the skillet with a tsp of butter. Sauteed them a little bit, covered them for a bit until they were soft.

Here is where I read the Dessert chapter intro- where Sally Fallon reminds us desserts are treats and not to be eaten on a daily basis. Even if they are naturally sweetened. She ends the paragraph with “Finally, never eat sweet things without some fat to accompany them- whether it be cream on fruit or in ice cream, or butter and eggs in cakes and pies. Fats like butter, cream, and egg yolks slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream while providing fat soluble nutrients…” (Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon, P. 535). So. Yes I will be adding a bit of creme fraiche to my apples!

When the apples are soft drizzle barely 1/4 tsp of honey and a few dashes of cinammon, mix to coat all the apples. These were good already. With a little creme fraiche on the top they were completely incredible. Sweet. Slightly tart. Nice texture. Satisfying.

By the way I was watching better quality TV- an old 1990 rerun of Law & Order and an amazing documentary on KCTS Public TV called “Eating Alaska” (which I highly recommend).

  1. Muy delicioso !! Using this apple dessert to wean ourselves from the addiction to the mini chocolate bars left over from Halloween which we kept hiding but finding.

  2. Anything with cinnamon is a winner! Yumyum!
